Hi All

Has anyone every been prescribed Nortriptylene for depression? If so
I would love to hear from you about how effective it was and any side
effects.

It was effective for me, too -- although I couldn't sleep well at all
when I took it. Funny how differently we react, huh?

I do remember constipation, weight gain, insomnia, and some lethargy.
The weight gain, though, is something not to consider too much -- I
took it during an anorexic episode, and was significantly underweight
when I started it.

It was a good drug for me, and it's very much worth trying. It was the
only TCA I could tolerate, because they all lowered my BP too much.
Hope that helps, and that it works well for you, too.

Thank you so much for replying - I note what you have both said and
both of you have said positive things about the medication.

It is giving me a more restful night's sleep that's for sure.

I am going to complicate matters more now and ask if anyone has ever
mixed a tricyclic with an SSRI. Specifically, Citalapram with
Nortriptylene.

The Citalapram never worked completely for me only partially. The
Citalapram was increased to see if I could get some benefit at a higher
dosage, Unfortunately on the higher dosage I developed dry eye
syndrome which is stingy and very very sensitive eyes.

The Citalapram had to be decreased and my psychiatrist suggested mixing
Nortriptylene with the Citalapram for my depression. As I said before
Im on a low dosage of Nortriptylene at the moment and the intention is
to raise the Nortriptylene and decrease the Citalapram.

IF ANYONE has any views, comments, advice or similar experiences then I
would love to hear from you.

With many thanks
Ginger

Ginger...yeah its perfectly logical to mix Pamelor with SSRIs since they
work
on different neurotransmitters. I unfortunately don't get any therapeutic
response
from SSRIs so I can't say its a great mix for depression. Drugs like
Effexor and
Cymbalta do the equivalent. Personally, I like Pamelor because its a very
clean
anti-depressant and doesn't leave me zonked after I get out of bed or make
me wake
early. Other TCAs like Desipramine and Doxepin are less tolerable.

If you can get relief from depression from Pamelor alone...more power to
you.

I know that doctors prescribe small doses of Pamelor and sometimes get good
results...but
I've ramped up my dose as high as 225mg + without that much trouble...I just
sleep real
deep and long.

Dear Don

Thanks so much. You eased my mind a lot. You seem very well informed
and Im grateful for you giving me the benefit of your knowledge.

Can I ask you if you suffered stomach pains on this medication. I know
it causes constipation - the psychiatrist did warn me of that - she
said to eat pineapple and kiwi. However, this morning I have had
chronic stomach pains and it feels like I have a lump of lead in my
stomach. Am I being stupid? Maybe that is the constipation kicking
in.

Don, did you suffer from anxiety as well? If so, did the
Nortriptylene help the anxiety?

Take care
Ginger
