From: ---MIKE--- on 15 Aug 2008 07:55 After taking Fosamax for five years, I stopped last February. I had developed severe heartburn and chest pains during exertion (such as walking and snow shovelling). All kinds of tests (cardiograms, stress test, endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound) were negative. I took daily Nexium for the heartburn and Albuterol inhaler before my walks. For several weeks now I have stopped ALL medications and the "distress" has not returned. I feel that the Fosamax was causing these problems and it took the six months for the symptoms to go away. Since I do have osteoporosis I am taking Strontium Citrate for my bones. ---MIKE--- >>In the White Mountains of New Hampshire >> (44° 15' N - Elevation 1580')

Given that the Fosamax must have been prescribed by a medic, I wonder whether Mike informed that medic of what he did. I have seen nothing to indicate that strontium citrate is a substitute for a bisphosphonate. If Mike's problems actually were caused by the Fosamax, and they are certainly a known side effect (taking care not to lie down for some time after swallowing the dose is avoidance technique), resort to the infused bisphosphonates Zometa or Aredia may be the answer. Seems to me that, if a bisphosphonate was necessary, it still is. I recommend testing BMD (bone mineral density) at least yearly. What is Mike's history in that regard? Lastly, Zometa and Aredia have their own sets of SEs. Strum recommends that the initial dose of Zometa should be one (1) mg rather than the usual four. Reason: to avoid acute phase response. From: ---MIKE--- on 15 Aug 2008 13:44 I always took the Fosamax with a large glass of warm, distilled water and stayed upright for one hour before eating breakfast. None of my medics were able to pinpoint the cause of my heartburn and chest distress. I plan on taking a bone density test next spring (a year after the last one). The medics concluded that my heart was fine, my esophogas was fine and all my organs seemed to be normal. Also, a blood test showed no problems. ---MIKE--- >>In the White Mountains of New Hampshire >> (44° 15' N - Elevation 1580')
