From: Niren Kalathia on 14 Sep 2005 18:23 Hello, I was on study medicine called FTY720 since my kidney transplant which was done in last sept. now they found that FTY720 has very adverse side effect on eyes which can leeds to parmanent blindness. so Novartis decided to stop further devlopment of FTY720 ( According to my transplant center) now I have to switch on some other immunosuppressive if anybody can help in this I will appriciate Thanks Niren
From: plz.spam.here on 4 Oct 2005 11:36 This is strange and sad news. FTY720 has completed Phase II for multiple sclerosis. After being on the drug for 6 months, 98% of the 255 patients on the drug chose to continue taking it. If there were serious side effects like blindness, you would think the re-enrollment would be much lower. Novartis is also planning Phase III so that all had me hopinh the drug must be quite safe. The patients have been on the drug for a year, some of them at 5mg/day. Anyways a side-effect like blindness would be really unfortunate for a drug as unique as FTY720! :( The fact that it can be so useful for both a chronic degenerate disease like MS as well as long-term graft-host immunosuppresion makes it especially unfortunate. What was your dose per day? Source: http://www.mydna.com/resources/clintrial/resources/news/200510/news_20051003_novmsd.html
