From: Poststructuralist on 15 Aug 2008 00:13 The following is from "American Muslim Briefs," one of the news reviews I receive everyday. It refers to Michael Savage's attacks on Muslims *and* to his attacks on autistics: -- Regards, Mark A. Foster, Ph.D. * http://www.markfoster.net "... the modern challenge is how to live with uncertainty. The basic fault lines today are not between people with different beliefs but between people who hold these beliefs with an element of uncertainty and people who hold these beliefs with a pretense of certitude." Peter L. Berger, sociologist Hate Radio Host Drops Suit Against Muslim Group CAIR says hosts bizarre and frivolous claims would not have stood up in court (WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/14/2008) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced tonight that syndicated hate radio talk show host Michael Savage will not re-file his lawsuit against the Washington-based Islamic civil rights and advocacy group. Savages attorney today filed a Notice of Plaintiff Michael Savage's Decision Not to File an Amended Complaint as to Rico Cause of Action with the U.S. District Court Northern District of California. SEE: Talk Show Host Drops Lawsuit Against Islamic Rights Group (SF Chronicle) Last year, Savage sued CAIR after the group posted audio clips from his October 29, 2007, program on its website. In those clips, Savage, whose "Savage Nation" program airs on more than 300 radio stations nationwide, screamed attacks on Muslims, Islam and the Quran. CAIR called on radio listeners of all faiths to contact companies that advertise on the program to express their concerns about the host's anti-Muslim bigotry. SEE: National Radio Host Goes on Anti-Muslim Tirade In a ruling issued on last month, U.S. District Judge Susan Illston said members of the public are entitled to take excerpts from programs like Savage's in order to use them for comment and criticism. Judge Illston also dismissed a bizarre racketeering claim against CAIR in Savage's lawsuit, but allowed for an amended filing by August 15. SEE: CAIR Welcomes Dismissal of Savage's Retaliatory' Lawsuit In a statement reacting to Savages decision to drop the lawsuit, CAIR stated: It is obvious that Mr. Savage finally came to realize that his bizarre and frivolous smears would not stand up in a court of law. It is a pity that he does not show as much common sense while spewing invective daily against religious, ethnic and even medical minorities on his hate radio program. CAIR said it expects Savage to try and explain his decision to drop the suit, which he told listeners would be taken all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, with equally frivolous and defamatory on-air claims. A community and interfaith coalition called Hate Hurts America (HHA) was formed in response to Savage's rhetorical attacks on Muslims and other minority groups. A number of advertisers responded to the CAIR and HHA campaigns by either dropping or refusing to air commercials on "Savage Nation." SEE: Hate Hurts America Savage has a long history of on-air bigotry. Parents of autistic children were outraged by comments Savage made on his July 16 program in which he claimed that 99 percent of autism cases are fraudulent. He called autism a "phony disease" and autistic children "brats." Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. - END - CONTACT: CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, 202-488-8787 or 202-744-7726, E-Mail: ihooper(a)cair.com; CAIR Communications Coordinator Amina Rubin, 202-488-8787, E-Mail: arubin(a)cair.com
From: tkondaks on 17 Aug 2008 15:39 For anyone who loves freedom, the defeat of the Savage lawsuit is a cause for celebration. Savage hookwinked us all by telling us that this lawsuit was a cause for free speech. Yeah, it was about free speech but it was CAIRs free speech that was being infringed, not Savages. Indeed, if Savage had prevailed, first amendment rights would have lessened for all of us. America is such a great country that we even extend free speech to questionable organisations like CAIR. Michael Savage is an ENEMY of free speech: http://tinyurl.com/27ladx .

It is only in the spirit of celebrating our mutual freedom of speech when I observe: I find it disturbing that hundreds of millions of Muslims believe a murdering pedophile, thief and rapist is the perfect paradigm of morality. Freedom of speech must be defended because frankly if there were no freedom of speech I, as a lifelong devout atheist, would have to observe that the Qu'ran is hate propaganda intentionally and explicitly written to foment hatred against me. What's all this "I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them" stuff anyway? And why do Muslims always cut 5:32 out of context? Surah 5:32-38 On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter; Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case, know that Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. O ye who believe! Do your duty to Allah, seek the means of approach unto Him, and strive with might and main in his cause: that ye may prosper. As to those who reject Faith,- if they had everything on earth, and twice repeated, to give as ransom for the penalty of the Day of Judgment, it would never be accepted of them, theirs would be a grievous penalty. Their wish will be to get out of the Fire, but never will they get out therefrom: their penalty will be one that endures. As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is Exalted in power. Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that describes a religion of peace?
