From: Barbara H on 6 Aug 2008 15:19 Hello - don't post very often but I do read every day. Think I'll start asking a few more questions since I seem to be sliding the wrong way. Just got my lab results back and while I know what caused my A1c to jump I'm not sure how the other things improved .... except tryglycerides which are much worse. Just started Byetta so maybe 3 mos. from now all of this will be better. I've cut my carbs (total day) and am enjoying the appetite suppression Byetta seems to cause. I've gained back about 15 lbs. from the 40 I lost last year and I also seem to have lost some of my drive to be diligent. You've all taught me enough to mostly know the right things to say. It's just doing the right things that has been harder the past few months. I guess a good kick in the seat of the pants is really what I need! (Not too hard though) :-) Labs 12/07 7/08 FBG 122 122 A1c 5.9 6.4 Trygly... 136 181 Choles.. 209 198 HDL 39 49 LDL 148 113 Barbara H Type 2, Metformin 1500, Byetta 2x5, dx 7/06

Your TGLs indicate either too many carbs or too many calories (and the weight gain reinforces this). But the good news is that your HDL went up. I'd say LDL going down is good news, but with high TGLs and still relatively low HDL, your LDL is likely the small, dense, atherogenic type. Once you give yourself that kick daily, you should see better TGLs and HDL and A1c, too. That 6.4 indicates that your average may still be way too high. But good on you for recognizing it! Susan

(Not too >hard though) :-) Well, those trigs tell the story - plus I've just read a post of yours above that says you're taking 15 - 45g carbs with every meal, including toast and a peach for breakfast :P But getting the HDL up is cool. Anyway it was someone else who said they were taking 15 - 45 carbs with every meal. But, yes it was me eating the peach and toast. :-) I know, I know. The peach was small ... 10 carbs and the toast was high fiber whole wheat at 9. Yes, I am having more carbs at breakfast and my bg has not been higher than 99 after eating. So, even with good bg reading I should reduce my carbs even more to lower trigs? I can do that, I think. My noon and evening meal are seldom over 30-35. Other than my fasting all of my bg readings have been between 90 and 102 for 5 days now. I'm doing about 80 to 85 carbs per day. Yesterday was 77 total. Not doing any between meal snacks either. All this "reform" since going on Byetta. Is there an easy way to calculate the number of carbs one should consume? Other than testing? Be nice if there was a formula.
