From: Mal on 28 Jul 2008 12:56 and found it quite handy. Much better than doing tedious long division. But I now wonder if logs are taught at all now, what with calculators and what-not. And, come to think about it, what happened to the slide-rule? They were quite handy too, but I haven't seen anyone use one for years. The world is changing, but no-body tells me. ;o) -- Mal The first word I type in any message, has only a half chance of being true. Anything that follows, is anybody's guess.

I had just worked out which way round it went when i stopped doing maths ;) I belong to the league for the mathematically inept.

I was always good at maths, my mental arithmetic was fast and sure, still is. I can beat Carol on countdown. If I could have gone to university, I would have studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry and probably Biology. I got GCE in all these subjects, and it was a tad harder then. Alas it was not to be so. I became a physical labourer. I was lucky in the fact that I was taught by excellent school teachers, and yes, they did make us chant our times-tables and things. Today they seem to think that learning things parrot fashion is wrong. Not so .... ask the parrots .... now considered much smarter than we ever took them for. ` Have you ever played darts with these people who can neither add nor subtract, and they expect you to do it? How can you enjoy a game of darts under those circumstances? You spend more time marking the board than enjoying the game. Hell it leaves no time to have a drink. I was taught arithmetic, algebra, and geometry at school, and never heard of trigonemetry, and non euclidean stuff baffles me to this very day. imaginary numbers, you know square roots of minus-numbers and other stuff, how I wish I could have had some one to walk me through (just teach me). Infinity and dividing by zero .... I would have loved to have learned this stuff, sadly I have only a rudimentry understanding, how I have craved for more, you would not believe, but too late now. Not that it wasn't about, simply I was never offered the chance. On the other hand, I could not stand music lessons, or art (I think we used to call them drawing lessons) and I had a particular hatred for woodwork, I pissed about for 5 years, pretending to make a sea-grass stool (in reality I used to do my latin homework, at which I was equally bad). My mother refused to buy it (it was less than 5/-, and I don't blame her, it was utter rubbish. and 5 shillings was 5 shillings) Now why did they waste my time and their time teaching me carpentry? I had so little interest in it. that I doubt if the son of god himself could have got me interested. He was a carpenter I believe. Now you might think I am drunk ...... you would be right in so thinking. -- Mal The first word I type in any message, has only a half chance of being true. Anything that follows, is anybody's guess.
