Yesterday I was in my wheelchair and working on my patio garden with my
prosthesis on and found that my prosthesis began to fall off, it is held on
by the outer sleeve. I had to go into my home and put on another sock to get
a tighter fitting.
I forgot but how many or to what thickness of socks do you have to wear
before you might have to look at having a new socket made?

I'm AK and don't use socks, so I'm just repeating what I've heard elsewhere,
but ten plies seems to be the general limit for a decent fitting BK socket.

I am an AK of 10+ years, but from the mechanics of it, when it comes to BK's
I think the size and weight of the amputee wearer have a lot to do with it
as well as the length of the residual limb. With summer sweat also factor
is. Like we all do, you are just going to have to learn as you go Moe.
You'll figure it out.

Thanks that is what I have been told by the VA Hospital.
This is what was emailed back to me:

Usually around 15, but can be less. That's great that you're losing some
volume. Is it pretty consistent, or is it sometimes tight, sometimes loose?

Now my question is, does one's stump finally gets down to a final size or do
you change size for the rest of your life?

In my opinion, and in an ideal world, the best fit would be to wear only a
single two-ply sock which would give you the best control of your
prosthesis. I am at that stage now but only because I have gained a lot of
weight (not good). There are different thicknesses or "plys" of socks (1x,
2x, 4x, 5x ply) and I have worn as many as 8 plys which consisted of two
4-ply socks (it's easier to put on 2 socks of 4-ply than 8 socks of single
ply thickness).
