From: MiceElf on 29 Jun 2005 20:07 hello all, i've been having a variety of weird symptoms for about a year now. had a couple of (what we believe to have been) gall bladder attacks and then constant burning in the chest (like a runner's burn), frequent pain under the ribcage and, periodic reflux and chronic uncontrolloable hunger. had an ultrasound which indicates that i do have a stone near the valve. an upper gi has revealed a pucker (i guess beginnings of a hernia?) at the top of the stomach and a possible ulcer. before addressing the gall stone, the doctor has scheduled an endoscopy for next month to see about the ulcer. i went on-line to do research and found out about helicobacter pylori. my question is, will they look for h. pylori as a matter of routine when they do the endoscopy? also, the doctor has prescribed nexium which i started taking last week. i'm curious if nexium could mask the h. pylori? i guess i'm wondering about the "masking" because i'm hypothyroid and i know how certain things, like calcium for instance, may decrease absorption of T4. hope the second questions isn't silly! any help would be greatly appreciated! best regards, mina
From: Bill Poston on 29 Jun 2005 21:51 A simple blood or breath test can detect h. pylori. The burning stomach and stomach area is a typical symptom. I had h. pylori back in 1997 and took two treatments of strong antibiotics. The h. pylori went away each time for six months and returned each time. The side effects from the strong antibiotics were awful. Diarrhea, yeast infection and other bad things. I discovered a surprising treatment for h. pylori on the Internet. Mastic Gum made from the bark of a tree onlyu grown in Greese. It really works. I ordered from a local health food store. The Mastic Gum is manufactored by Nutricology. www.nutricology.com When I first took it I took one capsule morning and afternoon between meals. Didn't help. I doubled dosage and withing a week symptoms were gone. Symtpoms came back about a year ago. I took more Mastic Gum and h. pylori went away and has stayed gone. Thank goodness. Hope this helps. Yes, they will do biopsies for Helicobacter pylori when they do the endoscopy if there are signs of inflammation or erosion of the stomach and/or duodenum. Your symptoms may be due to gallbladder disease *or* GER, or possibly both. Helicobacter has nothing to do with either of these things. Note that the endoscopy will only be able to diagnose GER if it has caused esophagitis, stricture, or Barrett's esophagus. A normal endoscopy doesn't rule out GER. If the endoscopy is normal, they will likely recommend that your gallbladder be removed as that then becomes the most likely cause of your symptoms. They may recommend an ambulatory pH test, which is the only way to diagnose GER if the endoscopy is normal. HMc
