I've been diagnosed with severe heart failure after going to the Dr 'cos my
ankles were swollen. I also have fluid in my left lung. I was fitted with a
Medtronic pacemaker four years ago for bradycardia. I also have tachycardia.
I am on a beta blocker, ACE inhibitor, Disprin and diuretic. The Dr says
it's progressive. When I asked how long I have to live, she was vague. Any
help?

I am by no means a doctor nor do I play one on TV. However, speaking
from experiance - I was diagnoised with CHF when I was 19 (I'm 35 now)
ago and was in it for several years off and on. I was slated for the
transplant list but refused.

When I first got the news I was told also they don't have any idea how
long it'll be before my heart grows too weak. And that it was caused
by a fault St. Judes valve - which the previous doctor screwed up
sewing it in and I couldn't find anyone to fix it since I didn't have
insurance.

I finally stumbled on a wonderful hospital that would do it even
without insurance (Deborah Heart Hospital in Brownsmill, NJ (Insert
shameless plug here)).

Anyways, by this time my EF factor was about 10 and my heart beat so
weak they couldn't get it using a blood preasure machine.

So of course the doctor would say - don't do this, don't do that, blah
blah blah. Well, I pretty much ignored him and did what I wanted - I
figured I'm going to die anyway so why not try to enjoy the time I
have left.

Well, here we are 16 years later and I'm still alive and kicking. My
ef has come up to about 25% - yeah, still way below acceptable levels
but my point is, I'm still here.

So even though you have a "time frame" there really is no telling what
my happen! The heart is a wonderful thing and can sometimes heal
itself as can the body. Don't give up, keep on going and do what you
can. Perhaps you can beat it.

And just in case your wondering - I had my stem cell therapy in
Bangkok. However, my understanding is they are doing experiments with
it in the Texas Heart Institute. Though it didn't help me (I
personally think I wasn't really a viable candidate for it but they
tried it anyways) I've heard of other patients whom it's help increase
their quality of life dramatically. And of course other's like me
that it didn't do anything for.

SOOO, if your willing, perhaps you might want to look into it. It can
be costly but it may also save your life.

Just remember though - this is NOT medical advice and what I've said
may not be typical results and may not be right for you!!
