From: Gary on 22 May 2005 10:08 Does anyone out there have experience with a company called Hanger, that supplies prosthetics to those in need? Wife is a new BKA - stitches aren't even out, and we're beginning some research on the prosthetic selection and fitting process. The hospital hooked us up with Hanger, and a rep came out to visit her before we checked out to leave materials, supplies, etc. Wonder if anyone has had experience with Hanger, their devices, and their program? Many Thanks, Gary (for Pam)
From: Glenn Woodell on 22 May 2005 23:46 Other prosthetists hear the Hangar guys talking about their "numbers", referring to how many people they have "enlisted". They spend more time on marketing than they do on actually making your prothesis, some claiming to make a leg in a day. I'm sure there are some happy customers but when I approached them about a leg I could take in the water I was told no deal. I would highly suggest looking up other amputees and finding some who walk really well and asking them who they go to. They may be hard to find though becaus ethey will not likely be attending any amputee support meetings since they will be too busy out doing other things like getting on with their lives. Absolutely no disrespect to the support groups as they provide a vital role for those in need. But those who are lucky enough to be good walkers are out doing things that non-amputees do. Find a couple of you can and talk to them. Don't let the marketers get to you. Tell us where you are in case someone here is familiar with your area. Not sure I would do that again. They didn't want to listen to me. I kept hearing, "I've been doing this for 15 years, I know what I'm doing". Your experience may differ from mine. My leg works, I just didn't like the Hanger guy in my area. JackK
From: Glenn Woodell on 23 May 2005 17:54 I just took a look at their website and my prosthetist has been doing the same things they have been doing but without the fancy trade names. I wear my leg from aboput 6:30 in the morning until about midnight every day with total comfort. I'll let you know if I come up with a fancy name for mine. :) Seriously, they seem to have a limited set of choices when it comes to feet/ankles. Mine gives me quite a choice. I guess that's what you get with cookie cutter prosthetics. I have been using Hangar since my accident and really can't complain. As everyone remembers, things shrink drastically the first year so adjustments are required frequently. That is the boat I'm in right now. I'm happy with the service I've received from my prosthetist thus far. I do think he is probably the exception as far as Hangar goes. Another guy I was seeing there briefly seemed to be right off the street and wasn't very knowledgeable. Eventually, I can see myself finding a smaller organization that offers more personalized care. The guy at Hangar I've been seeing has done a good job each time I've seen him. I've left his office pain free, moving well, and with a comfortable fitting socket. I guess I'm still new to this lifestyle and don't know what more to expect. It sounds like most people here have had bad experiences with Hangar. You have all, at least, taught me to be on the lookout for inadequate care.
