Hi,
Please tell me why everyone refers to a Goiter as "Just a goiter".
I have a goiter and 2 growths in it. And this bothers me and scares me.
Why does everyone play it down. I understand there is much worse but
this to isn't normal.

Yes, I wondered this too, Kathy. Goitres can grow large and cause
problems. I, too have a goitre and it worries me also. The endo I saw a
few years back wanted to remove it and my thyroid and I ran away from
that.

Hi Kathy,
To me, a Goiter means no cancer, that's a relief. I guess when you've had
as many medical problems as I've had a Goiter seems pretty innocent. You can
have a goiter and live a long, long time with no problems. It doesn't have
to be removed unless it causes problems. My ENT doc said the nodules "are"
the goiter and it's pretty much normal thyroid tissue.

Is that your doctor or this group? A goiter is "just a goiter" if you
don't mind food getting stuck in your throat, or waking up choking at
night.

In some cases, it can be shrunk with suppressive doses of Armour
Thyroid. In other cases it has to be tolerated or removed.

Inadequate iodine intake (not enough iodized salt and living in a
historic goiter belt area) is one cause. When iodine intake is
inadequate, more TSH is produced and if the thyroid can't keep up, it
tries to grow larger to help produce more thyroid hormone. So,
ultimately, TSH causes a goiter. Which is why in some cases, Armour
will allow it to shrink back to size.

Conversely, a goiter can be produced by too much iodine, but I believe
that's a much rarer occurrence.

If my doc had suggested removing mine I would be more upset. I guess it
depends on how big it is. If it interferes with eating and breathing then
it's definitely a problem.
