From: Irene Carpe on 19 Aug 2008 23:26 Hi All, I am 77 years old and was diagnosed with underactive thyroid while in my 40's. Was on synthyroid for years but never felt quite well. Read on this group about Armour thyroid medication so asked my physician's assistant if I could switch to Armour. She agreed and started me out on 30mg. I felt good but could not keep my eyes open during the morning so she kept increasing my dosage until I could stay awake. Am feeling much better on the Armour but am on a high dose; 120mg am and 120mg pm. This year I went to my endocrinologist and he did blood work for low adrenals, which did not show up in the blood work, but he said that I had acute autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is the fist I was told this. Last week Friday I had an appointment with a dermatoligist to have a pre-cancerous spot removed from my arm. The Monday before the visit I broke out in a small rash over my arms and back. It was very itchy. I also broke out in some itchy blisters on my elbows; these I have had for years along with hives on my buttocks. The dermatologist looked at the rash and blisters and took a biopsy of both blisters. She said she believes I am gluten intolerant but will know for sure when she gets the results of the biopsy. When I avoid foods with gluten the rash clears up but comes out again if I eat something with gluten. Needless to say I am trying to stay gluten free. I go back to the dermatologist next week to have the stitches out and to find out the results of my biopsy and to have the pre-cancerous spot removed from my arm. Gluten intolerance is another autoimmune disease and is common with people who have thyroid problems. I have had this condition for years and had the itchy blisters and hives but never the rash until this point. Must be I reached the end of my tolerance of gluten. Thought the rest of you thyroid people might want to ask for blood work to see if you are gluten intolerant. Irene
From: Dee on 20 Aug 2008 09:05 Hi Irene, I agree with you about being checked for other auto-immune diseases such as celiac disease if you have Hashimoto's. I was diagnosed with celiac first (over 10 years ago); and Hashimoto's recently (which I know I've had for many years). It does sound like you may have Dermatitis Herpetiformis, which is treated by following a gluten-free diet. Do you have any digestive symptoms, or other symptoms, of Celiac? Did you also know that you should use only gluten-free lotions, shampoos, toothpastes, etc? It seems extreme, and I wasn't as diligent about it before, but I now make sure everything I touch (virtually) has no gluten in it. It gets exhausting. : ) Here's a gluten-free forum I participate in occasionally (there is a sub-forum for DH): http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/lofiversion/index.php/ Dee "Irene Carpe" <ircarpe(a)frontiernet.net> wrote in message news:C4D1072A.BE3A%ircarpe(a)frontiernet.net... > Hi All, > > I am 77 years old and was diagnosed with underactive thyroid while in my > 40's. Of course they are more flexible, supple, and limber then stiff, rigid, brittle you right now ... which would happen to anyone so poorly treated as you. It is not personal, no more then a hammer blister with hammer accidents are personal. Stop hammering and the blistgers go away sort of thing. Not that you have a hammer intollerance. sumbuddie on da watchtower wear blind sea :)
From: Irene Carpe on 20 Aug 2008 23:09 Hi Dee, Thank you for your reply to my being gluten intolerant. It is going to take a while to get my bearing on things. My niece is celiac also and I spoke to her the other day and she said she is going to have her thyroid checked.Luckily I do not have any digestive problems. In fact the only problem was the Dermatitis Herpetiformis which none of the medical people ever told me was due to gluten intolerance. I have had to deal with the itchy blisters and hives on my own. I found the most effective thing was using Nivea Body Lotion with Vitamin E. .. It was the only thing that took the itch out. Once the rash broke out the gluten intolerance showed it's ugly head. Thank you for your information and the site for a support group. Have been looking for one to no avail. Was not aware that there is gluten free toothpaste, lotions and shampoos. Guess I have a lot to learn about this disease. Thank you for your help. It's a good thing you advised her. If she does have Hashimoto's, it will be beneficial to find out sooner rather than later. >Luckily I do not have any digestive problems. Hmm. I don't think I have DH - I only had a strange rash one time, I think. BUT, I am itchy a lot. Of course, I'm gluten-free, so maybe I do have it at this point, but don't break out in a rash because of my diet. > > Once the rash broke out the gluten intolerance showed it's ugly head. > > Thank you for your information and the site for a support group. Some people don't think lotion can cause a problem. I'm not sure, honestly. I'm diligent because I was having so many health problems, that I went strictly gluten-free with everything so that I could eliminate any possible source. >Thank you for your help. Good luck. I hope you post back again. I'm interested in hearing how you reached the dosage of 240 mgs of Armour. (My doctor wants me to stay at 60 mgs (!) because I'm only ~100 lbs - I don't think it's a large enough dosage.)
