From: John Coles on 18 Jun 2008 10:03 Hi Friends, Following on from an earlier post about trying to get pain relief from my arthritis, does anyone here have any experience of taking Glucosamine and Chondroiitin? When I ask my local Pharmacist recently she suggest that I get my Doctor to prescribe me some. However when I asked my Doctor she suggested this would be a waste of time. Plus is this likely to further upset my Crohns? Sorry about the different font sizes I don't know what happened there. Kind regards to one and all, John

Lately what I've been doing (under recommendation of my cardiologist) is taking fish oil and flaxseed oil capsules -- the Omega 3 ones. They are supposed to help with heart health, but also with arthritis issues (not to mention they're great for dry skin!) I don't think the Glucosamine et al would negatively affect you tho, and the only way to find out if it's helpful is to try it :) Sara

My father has severe osteoarthritis of his knees and uses it. When he started I checked it out and research was mixed. I kept an eye on it and slowly some reputable positive results have been found. Currently it seems that Glucosamine can help with pain but not people with mild arthritis. Somethings to read: NIH GAIT Study Supports Use Of Glucosamine And Chondroitin For Osteoarthritis Treatment http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/37989.php (2/2006) Good News For Knees, Arthritis Today Special Report http://www.arthritis.org/good-news-for-knees.php (2/2007) Abstract: Dietary supplements for osteoarthritis http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18246887 (1/2008) ...Although the evidence is not entirely consistent, most research suggests that glucosamine sulfate can improve symptoms of pain related to osteoarthritis, as well as slow disease progression in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Chondroitin sulfate also appears to reduce osteoarthritis symptoms and is often combined with glucosamine, but there is no reliable evidence that the combination is more effective than either agent alone.... > When I ask my local Pharmacist recently she suggest that I get my Doctor to > prescribe me some. In the USA, most health plans don't cover supplements and they are non-prescription mostly. > Plus is this likely to further upset my Crohns? Glucosamine has some preliminary research showing it may help CD. See http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/glucosamine-000306.htm and http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-glucosamine.html, then search down for crohn's. HTH, -- Luke
