My surgeon says the fistulas will heal on their own qith the help of
HUMIRA.

Anyone had similar experience?

HELP!
From: mgbio on
I took Remicade for my fistulas, which is very similar to Humira in
effect. It closed the fistulas, but I'm not sure if they ever fully
healed. In the end, a huge abscess formed that had to be surgically
repaired. 6MP kept me fistula free since then.

Sorry for the acronyms
NPO: Nothing by mouth, i.e., bowl rest
TPN: Total parenteral nutrition, i.e., IV bag for 12 hours every day.

This is of course a very difficult regime to go thru for however many
weeks or months they want me to go thru. I was wondering if anyone
else had this type of treatment or did the meds just clsoe the
fisutlas on their own.

thanks kindly, suffering...

I had an enterovaginal fistula with associated abscess in 2005 and it took
about 5 months to heal on a liquid diet with Entocort as the ileal Crohn's
treatment.

Remicade or Humira, etc., are recognised state-of-the-art treatments for
fistulas. Old school was liquid diet plus antibiotics. However, your doctor
sounds as though he is an expert as nil by mouth in conjunction with Humira
should be even better. So he is seriously tackling your condition and
sparing no expense. The fistulas should, if they are going to heal at all,
heal faster using his method. If this approach fails you might, as mgbio
indicated, need an operation. Abscesses are common, but not mandatory with
fistulas.

A word of warning, if your CVC (central venous catheter) starts itching or
if there is any unusual discomfort it is a sign of infection and requires
immediate antibiotic treatment and identification of the infection source.

I had Pseudomonas infection in 2005 when I was on TPN and felt great for the
first few days. Then I developed itching at the CVC site plus terrible
migraine-type headaches. Once sepsis had set in (fever, chills, shakes...)
they identified the bug and sent me for an immediate MRI because (luckily I
was unaware of this at the time) Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause brain
abscesses amongst other things. The migraines were an indicator that
something was not right in that department as I am not a migraine sufferer
as such. The nursing staff did not tell me that I should report any itching
or discomfort at the site to them, although it was probably on the consent
form somewhere. They had to discontinue the TPN after only 6 days on it. I
would also urge you to discuss the siting of the CVC - mine was on my neck
(RHS) and I had very long hair at the time. In the future I would plead for
an upper chest siting if possible, which I believe will be easier to keep
sterile. Don't get water anywhere near it - it is obviously sterile bandaged
and iodied, but nonetheless.
