From: Jaime on 5 Oct 2005 23:24 I'm wondering about just how many fat grams I should take in every day for weight loss. I keep my calories between 1400 and 1500 per day. I've heard that keeping my fat grams at 40 is a good number to start at. What do you all suggest? More? Less? I'm 5'3 inches tall, almost 44 and around 400 pounds. I am not positive about my weight but I estimate it there as I do not currently register on the doctor's office scale which only goes as high as 350 pounds.

Hello....I'm no doctor, but I can tell you that I have always heard that you should stay between 18 and 20 fat grams per day. This is what many doctors have put me on, but I guess everyone is different. 40 sounds pretty high to me. I know that Neutrasystems goes with the 18-20 grams. This is for females....men I believe can have 25-30. I can't remember exactly. Hope that helps. -- DisneyDana

Anyway, I'm no expert on this, but it seems that if you weigh about 400 lb and are eating 1400-1500 calories a day you are going to lose weight at a good rate no matter how much of it is fat. So why not relax and enjoy the fact that you are doing great things for your body simply by controlling calories! doug

It also has links to the Mayo Clinic site with additional information. Your daily fat intake will be based on a percentage of your total calories and will vary from person to person depending on their calorie level. Just be sure the fats you're eating are the good kind<g> Beverly

I believe the site I furnished Jaime recommended 25-35% so she's right on track. > > Anyway, I'm no expert on this, but it seems that if you weigh about 400 > lb and are eating 1400-1500 calories a day you are going to lose weight > at a good rate no matter how much of it is fat. Agreed.....it basically comes down to calories in/calories out for most of us. It's just a good idea to find the carb/protein/fat ratio that works best for us to control hunger, provide adequate energy levels, etc. > > So why not relax and enjoy the fact that you are doing great things for > your body simply by controlling calories! > > doug |
