I have CD.

Most of the time, things are okay --- asacol (10 per day) seems to help most
of the time.

BUT... here's what happens.

Although the CD has been found on the right side (terminal ileum) the
following flareup sequence often occurs:

I'll get excellent bowel movement, regular, etc. Then they increase and
become loose. Then I get the gnawing pain on my LEFT side. It feels inflamed
and the asacol doesn't help. I RARELY have problems on my right side, which
is where they sometimes find mild inflammation (apthous ulcers) during
colonoscopies (at other times the findings are normal). After about 4 days
of this miserable gnawing pain, I get the worst symptoms: constipation that
seems to last for a LONG time. I get miserable. BM's are very small, narrow,
and do not "empty" things. In fact, my GI feels my symptoms could well be
IBS. So far, we haven't been able to find any kind of successful treatment
modality. Any ideas?? Incidentally, I am a male, age 58, and I am going to
try Zelnorm (GI doc says it has helped some of his male patients)

Have you ruled out Diverticulosis?

Yeah --- colonoscopies have shown no problem on left hand side.

How about CT scan, a colonoscopy somehow missed not only diverticulae,
but an actual perforation. Both showed up in the CT.

Anecdote is not the plural of data, but for what it's worth, I have
inflammation in the termimal ilieum (probably mild CD per the GI) and
almost entirely right-sided pain and I'm never, ever constipated, even
with daily 3-9 tablets of Lomotil and pain management with Rx narcotics.
Many similar symptoms, including flat, narrow stools - just lots of 'em.
