From: Randy Fiore on 17 Nov 2008 12:53 I have been playing around with my dinner carb count and insulin. I have been shaving my potato down to a little less than 6 oz to about 5.95 oz. How many cards are in a 5.95 oz baked potato? (I have a few books that all count it differently.) Is there a definitive count that is reliable?

Don't even try. No baked potatoes. Just go low carb :).

How close do your calculations have to be? What do you mean, the books count it differently -- are they giving different numbers for the same type & size of potato cooked the same way? Does "shaving" mean "peeling" -- if so, why? the peel is good stuff! Just give it a good scrubbing, bake (I rub with oil first), & cut the whole thing in half. Are you T1 or T2? with what kind of control? What is your overall diet, exercise, & med routine like? How would a potato fit into that? (I don't believe that the answer to every carb-related question is "don't do that") bj

There is a very nice little program you can get for free which used to be called USDA Food Search. I believe the new version is at http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=5720 Online access http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ -- ------- Charly Coughran ccoughran(a)DELETE-TO-RESPOND-UCSD.EDU

Yeah I know, I like the peel too, but it's LOADED according to one article I recently read. Wes |
