From: Bill Bowden on 9 Mar 2007 00:41 I have bowel problems which produce excessive gas, blood, and aches and pains in the rectal area. I suspect it may be IBS but haven't seen a physican yet. I'm due for a checkup in a few weeks and will consult a physician. Symptoms are frequent urges to deficate that produce only gas and blood. Also, I wake up at night with pains in the rectal area caused by trapped gas that won't pass for an hour or so. Sometimes I take a pain pill to get back to sleep. Stools are small tarry colored that appear to be coated with blood. Is this a symptom of IBS ? Thanks for any opinions, -BB

Only a doctor can evaluate your symptoms, though, but IBS/spastic colon never involves bloody bowel movements. The only bleeding associated with IBS/spastic colon is some people experience hemorrhoidal bleeding, which shows up as small amounts of blood on the toilet paper. Bottom line (so tp speak) - see your doctor, sooner if you can; these can be serious symptoms, especially if accompanied by unexplained weightloss. -- "Did Father shoot him? From: aspidistra on 9 Mar 2007 15:29 Could be IBS but that is what they call it when everything else is ruled out. Can you have your GP refer you to a gastroenterologist? You need tests for parasites. But the most important thing is the blood in the stool which could mean several different problems - you will probably be given a colonoscopy and other tests to see what is going on inside. I have to go through these tests soon. I already tested positive for the parasites and am on a strong antibiotic but there might be something else happening too. It's important to see your doctor now and get this looked at. I read a few articles indicating Asprin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, so maybe that has something to do with it. But it doesn't explain the excessive gas that causes a dull ache in the bottom end. Maybe I should cut the Asprin dose in half and only take 125mG? -Bill

I can't comment on the aspirin at all - I don't know about that. I do recommend since this newsgroup is not very active, that you could ask questions at two forums I found that are very active with moderators and many people discussing their IBS problems. ibshope.com ibsgroup.org You have to create a username and join up but then you can post questions and search for topics and see what people have already posted. I do know if you have blood in the stool you must see a doctor now and get tested. My gastroenterologist told me that was the main thing to tell him about and then get a colonoscopy. Please don't delay this.
