From: Fran on 10 Jan 2008 18:54 Hi everyone, Fran again. I forgot to mention this in my earlier post. Ever since I have been on cpap I get sick 4 to 6 times a year. One year it was sick 3 weeks well 2 weeks sick and then all over again. It starts in my chest and goes up to my sinus. I have always blamed allergies but I am wondering if it could be my hose, mask, H20 chamber or a combination. I have consulted my primary care physician and he is clueless. I am thinking of going to an allergist but before I do I wonder if I am not cleaning my hose, mask and humidifier properly. Have any of you had any problems like this? How often do you buy a new hose, mask and H2O chamber? I tend to hold on to mine for a year. Any ideas you may have will be appreciated so much, Thanks, Fran

Me too, Fran! Three nasty colds this season so far. I'm usually good for 1/yr, but now with CPAP, it has changed (it seems) and winter has only recently started!

I used to get sick all the time, but since using CPAP (now APAP), I've only had 2 colds in the last 10 years, even though I'm exposed to colds often (children and co-workers). Sometimes I get seasonal allergy attacks, but if I use a nasal rinse before going to bed (the neti pot is great!), I wake up without symptoms. I'm sure the allergy filter in my machine helps. I only replace my equipment if it breaks or if a new improved machine or mask comes out that I want to try. I've been using the same hose for over 5 years. As for cleaning my equipment: Except for using a mask wet-wipe around the parts of the mask that touch my skin, I really don't wash anything else, since it doesn't seem to make any difference. I use my humidifier a couple months out of the year, and I rinse the chamber out about once a week. Maria

Same machine, tank, and hose for over four years, and I go about a year(+) with each mask, and may wash it about once every many months (only wet-wiping the mask and skin contact areas just before bed). I rarely rinse out the humidifier tank. I do use both the pollen filter and dust filter in the machine (the first is replaced and the second is washed every couple of months). My often-clogged nose generally clears out soon after turning on the machine, and I rarely have colds, so... --DR
