From: Derek Moody on 8 Feb 2007 13:44 Bird flu: Scientists raise alarm on global pandemic http://tinyurl.com/2fdhn2 Tuesday, Feb 6, 2007 Leading scientists have raised an alarm over an imminent global avian influenza pandemic. Speaking in Abuja at a media workshop on the issue, they, however, did not predict how soon the outbreak would occur. Mr. Dan Rutz, Associate Director of Communication Science, National Centre for Preparedness, Detection and Control of Infectious Diseases, Atalanta, Georgia, was among those who raised the alarm. He said the warning had made it imminent for governments to work together and plan ahead to avoid a major global disaster. In case there is pandemic, the world would be left with low technology, because there are no vaccines for now, he said. The former Science Reporter with CNN said there was no effective virus for the highly pathogenic HN51 type of the flu for now and that this had made it impossible to produce vaccine for pandemic strains. He argued that even if the virus that cased the flu was eventually found, the world capacity for manufacturing its vaccines was very limited. Rutz said the American government was intensifying efforts on research, survey and enhancement of global capacity to improve the technology for vaccine production and to build more factories globally. He said the world was at the second stage of the influenza, which was bird to human, having passed the first stage of bird to bird. The present stage is human infection with few subtype but no human to human spread or at most rare instances of spread to close contact, he said. Rutz said there were 265 cases of bird to human death globally, with the highest number of 59 in Indonesia, Vietnam, 42 and Egypt 10. The two-day training was organised by Voice of America for journalists in Abuja
