From: CPD on 29 Nov 2005 00:51 I currently use a ResMed Ultra Mirage full face CPAP mask--I'm a mouth breather. Bought a new one after my old one started to shift and leak at my eyes and chin, and just did not fit right anymore after 3 months. Anyone know what the best full-face mask out there might be as far as ease of use, fit reliability and comfort are concerned? Thanks for any tips! CPD

Fitting is not only a shape matter, but also a pressure matter. So proper fitting requires that the mask be fitted, using a blower set at your pressure. I was fitted with the first Fisher-Paykel mask and it leaked like crazy. If your face is shaped like mine, it wouldn't work for you either. Which mask are you using? If it is a ResMed, you can replace the seal only, unlike the Respironics, and I would think insurance would cover it every 3 months. HTH
From: CPD on 29 Nov 2005 01:30 Thanks, Normc! I've been on CPAP almost a year--a Respironics Remstar Plus unit--and the ResMed full-face mask worked well for me, as I mentioned, for about 3 months. Before that I was using a terrible nasal pillows mask. I was curious about the Respironics full face mask, but felt iffy about the quality just from the pictures and descriptions. Could have just gotten the liner "cushion" replacement for my ResMed, but I bought the entire new mask, plus supplies, today because insurance covers 90% of it, and I go to a high-deductible plan in January. Thought I'd post to see if others, like you, had similar experiences and might recommend a better full-face mask--if one exists--for next time. With the Respironics, for my face shape, I must really crank up the strap tension to keep the mask from leaking under the strap ends over my cheeks - but then it doesn't leak all night. With the ResMed, the fit is better, but it rides up leaving my mouth outside the mask (I put a loop between the side straps under my chin, which helps, but this often slips off during the night). Overall, for me I prefer the ResMed - but fit with particular masks and people is very hard to predict. -- David Ruether ruether(a)verizon.net rpn1(a)cornell.edu http://www.ferrario.com/ruether

I got a Respironics mask when I was travelling and needed a back-up. I like the Resmed mask a lot better, though the Respironics is usable. I wish they'd come in plastic boxes that fit into the carrier bag. I wrap mine, when travelling, and pack it in the bag; but I'm always concerned it will get squashed. DB |
