Yes, that is correct. Depression and anxiety can be comorbid, and
antidepressants and anxiolytics are often prescribed simultaneously to treat
the combination. However, people who are depressed and not anxious, or even
not depressed and not anxious, sometimes find that taking benzodiazepines
causes depression. In other words, unless you have anxiety, taking
benzodiazepines for more than a brief period can cause problems.

Actually Diazepam does a damned good job at cheering me up. Also for
your reference, I read I can't remember where (I think it was
wikipedia) that un-cooked potatoes contain Diazepam.

Very interesting! Until this week, I hadn't heard any stories like this, and
now there are two.
