From: Ratty on 3 Apr 2006 09:46 My wife went to her prosthetist for her new bk leg, this is a NEW socket, and she needed 8 ply of sock to get it to fit, is this right??? What do you think we should do?
From: robbie on 3 Apr 2006 10:45 Unless there was a definite reason for such a roomy socket, the answer is definitely NO, I replaced my sockets when I needed that many socks. Your wife shouldn't need any socks with the new socket. Make him/her do it over til its right. Otherwise go to another prosthetisis. Bob
From: Ratty on 3 Apr 2006 11:05 Our insurance BC/BS has us wait till she is in 23/25 ply before they approve the casting of a new socket. My wife's amp was in May of 2004, she has been going through a socket every 2 to 3 months. The first pros. was a pin lock, to much pistoning and caused an neuroma. Second pros. was seal in suction liner, and a volume change nightmare. Third pros is the current sleeve suspension, and at least she can ride a bike now, but walking is still a pain in the seating area. Wife can't run, she has no ACL on amp side. Currently have 2 feet, the Renegade and the Ceterus. Never two working pros. at one time. With recent changes in BC/BS, we can't afford our current prosthetist, he is the only one we have dealt with, he put my wife's temp foot on in the O.R. after the amp. Specification on last pros. From: ...Tom on 3 Apr 2006 12:51 My bk socket needs 5-ply, my pros had a target of from 3- to 11-ply and anything in that range is good according to him. Has your wife lost a lot of weight that your pros thinks she might re-gain? What reason did he give for making it that large?

"...Tom" <briggum(a)gmail.com> wrote 1: Has your wife lost a lot of weight that your pros thinks she might re-gain? answer: The scale says no, but she may have toned up some, loosing fat, gaining muscle, I do not believe that is enough to answer why this new socket was 8 ply to large. 2. What reason did he give for making it that large? answer: NONE, his only comment was "I can't keep up with you". My wife was not very active before the amputation in May 2004, due to constant pain she was suffering with, since the amputation she has done several 5k walks for various charities, and she loves riding her bike, pulling our Bulloxer (half pit bull half boxer) in her dog trailer we constructed, our dog is a amputee also. In the two year since the amp, she has gone through atleast 7 sockets. |
