I have been switched to Amitriptyline from Citalopram. The Citalopram
pooped out, I have been on it for 3 years. Anyway took my first dose
last night. WOW what a sleep. I slept for 18 hours. I do hope that
doesn't happen everytime. I have to work you know. I feel really good
though, it's like the sleep I should have had. For the first time in I
don't know how long I feel like I have had a good nights sleep. 18
hours yes. But maybe I needed it. My quality of sleep has been so bad
of late, maybe this is catch up time.

75mg of Amitriptypline.

I'll report back tomorrow as to if I sleep for as long again. My
feeling is I won't, I just think my body needed the catch up time.

Anyway musing over.

I started on Avanza (mirtazapine) a few weeks ago and it had a similar
effect at first. Now it has a pleasant drowsy effect about a half-hour
after taking it and I'm getting a good night's sleep.

I hope you have similar luck.

Amitriptyline (Elavil) has fairly substantial histamine (H1) binding
affinity, behind only doxepin and trimipramine among the tricyclics. H1
binding leads to drowsiness, as can occur with first generation
antihistamine drugs such as diphenhydramine (Benedryl). Some people quickly
accomodate to the sleep inducing effects, whereas others have a stable
response to it. It is indeed possible that you had one good "catch up"
sleep, and the effect will be less robust now. Restorative sleep is a
powerful healing and stabilizing influence, so this effect alone can be
worth using the drug. It's also a pretty good antidepressant in its own
right.

Good luck.

Remeron/Avanza also has histamine H1 binding, which accounts for its
somnorific effects. Unfortunately, this effect typically disappears at
higher doses. Be aware that significant rebound insomnia follows
discontinuation of this drug, so a lengthy taper is advised.

Well it's my third day. I managed to get up at 6:30 am this morning.
Didn't feel tired at all. I took my dose last night at 6:00 pm. I must
be getting some damned good quality sleep. I havn't felt this good or
clearheaded in a long while.

No side effect either. Just a little bit of dried mouth, but I can
summon up saliva easily.
