From: hypohypo on 18 Jun 2008 09:40 Hi all, I wish to know if it would be advisable for thyroid patients to have alcoholic beverages like beer or whisky or rum. If I were to go out with buddies for a drink or two, do I need to skip my hyperthyroid medicine after the drinks? Regards, Ajit

Also, for a brief time, I was taking a daily dose of Angostura bitters (the alcohol content of which is surprising--or at least, it was surprising to me) and that was no problem either. -- Rhonda Lea Kirk Fries If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

However, we've had several people who were hypo- note that tolerance for alcohol was nigh gone. Some of these people were ones who had been heavy drinkers prior to becoming hypo- and who indicated that they'd developed high tolerance and it all went *poof* with the hypo-. So, I'd suggest, start slow with alcohol -- maybe your tolerance for it has changed. Don't go chaning the thyroid meds because of drinking -- but try to time them not to occur at the same time, if you can. Remember, we do not know your whole medical condition, so we are just sharing our experiences -- not giving you medical advice. HTH Kevin
