From: HeatherOK on 7 Jun 2007 19:49 ADMINISTRATIVE NOTICE (last updated 9-2003) ALT.SUPPORT.DEPRESSION.MANIC.MODERATED (ASDMM) (contact email addresses are HeatherOK (heatherok(a)sbcglobal.net) What is ASDMM's Purpose? Alt.support.depression.manic.moderated (ASDMM) is a news group on usenet/uunet whose purpose is the following: To offer emotional support to people who have Bipolar Disorder (aka Manic Depression). This is also a forum which offers support to the significant others of people who have Bipolar Disorder. To offer acceptance, tolerance, encouragement, empathy, caring, and compassion to those who reach out for help. To share thoughts, ideas, and information about the condition of Bipolar Disorder and related or coexisting conditions (for example, depression, alcoholism, eating, disorders). Other medical conditions may be discussed as they often influence a person's coping skills and quality of life. To discuss treatment options including medication issues as well as therapy based methods. To explore research efforts focusing on Bipolar Disorder and related conditions. To present differing opinions regarding the various treatment methods (current and past) and protocols available. To offer shared experiences about living with Bipolar Disorder and lifestyle changes, which have helped us, cope with the challenges of this illness thereby improving our quality of life and of those around us. Subject matter FAQ's and other informational postings will be made on a regular basis. Some information may be posted on web sites with links posted on the ng. Readers should read the FAQ's and Administrative Notice before posting to ASDMM. Informational addresses are listed at the bottom of this document. WHY MODERATION? This is a moderated news group whose purpose is to keep the tone of the posts civil and respectful; to regulate unwanted spam; to discourage trolls and in extreme cases to exclude them form posting erroneous, misleading, and damaging information (e.g. "mental illness does not exist"; "do not take any medications"). In essence, our goal is to facilitate support for our participants. Off topic (OT) subjects such as humor/jokes should be identified in the subject header next to the title of the post. People can choose whether to read OT posts when they are identified as such, anyone attempting to post to ASDMM who infringes on the rights of *others* by putting forward ideas that are harmful or hateful will be curtailed by the moderators. First with a warning (returned message), and then with a temporary ban -- to be made permanent if necessary. ASDMM is an equal opportunity ng. As such, intolerance of others differences will not be tolerated. Any form of intolerance based on race; gender, age, disability, creed, national origin, sexual preference, lifestyle, or religion will not be tolerated. Period. Posting on religious issues, IF and only IF it comes out of a discussion is acceptable so long as it does not lead to the degradation of other religious beliefs. Cults or belief systems that deny the practices of modern medicine or encourage people to abandon medical treatment will not be accepted in this forum. Proselytizing on the newsgroup is not acceptable. Moderators will make all reasonable efforts to contact the sender regarding a post if the guidelines are breached. An explanation will be given to the poster as to the reason the post was rejected. The sender then has the option of rewording the post and re-sending it if she/he so chooses. Posters using false IDs or aliases, or munging email addresses will not be contacted. Posts violating the moderation policy will be deleted. The posting of suicide notes is generally not encouraged by ASDMM. If you plan on committing suicide and want to say goodbye before you go please take into consideration the well being of the other members of ASDMM. We are generally a pretty fragile group of individuals (we are bipolar after all) and seeing those types of posts could be a major trigger for a fellow group member to act out on their own, and in that case nobody wins. We ask that you contract with this group to WAIT to take action for 24 hours. We ask that you post again within 24 hours and tell us how you are feeling. Below are some things to help you do this. We ask that you read the suicide FAQ and at least two of the links posted there. CROSSPOSTING: Cross posting is only allowed to the parent news group, alt.support.depression.manic. The reason for this is that when we approve a post that is cross posted, we also approve posts for other moderated news groups. This is not proper practice--so we must honor other moderated news groups by deleting all cross posts to any ng, except ASDM. Submissions of URL's (web links) to ASDMM: The material ON a web page must conform to the general principals of ASDMM's posting policy to have its URL accepted for posting to ASDMM. All URL's must have a text description of the site, or the post may be returned, if reasonably possible. Additionally, there are two parent news groups dealing with Bipolar Disorder which are not moderated: news:alt.support.depression.manic news:soc.support.depression.manic The moderated news group is: news:alt.support.depression.manic.moderated Posting Options Stuff happens and people cannot always post from their accustomed news server. Most people have the option of using open news servers, signing up for news service above and beyond your ISP news service, or using a free web based news service such as http://groups.google.com/. These are all options for when your usual news server isn't working. With a moderated ng you have another option. You can submit posts via email by addressing an email to: asdmm(a)sbcglobal.net . The moderators will enter a news group field and your post will be processed. This method should be used in the event you are having trouble posting. Moderation Delays A note about the time before you see your post. Remember usenet/uunet is not a perfect medium and as such there will be a delay before a post that is submitted to the group appears. This delay will depend on whether or not a moderator(s) is available at the time of the submission and/or if there is a problem with the post. If your post does not show up right away, please do not re-send it. All attempts will be made to have moderation schedules in such a way that the delay time for posting should be minimal. Remember, if you submit a post without a valid e-mail address and there is a problem with it, we cannot contact you and the post will be delayed. If your address is valid, you will be contacted and you will then have the opportunity to re-submit the post. Remember, usenet/uunet is not a perfect system and some posts will get lost in the ether. At any point in the chain, something can go wrong. With a moderated group there are more links in the chain, thus there can be more problems withposts. If you are having trouble with posting, contact your support at your ISP first -- it is the first link in your chain. If you still have trouble, contact the Administrator of this newsgroup -- listed below at the bottom of this message. Even moderators' posts get lost and have to be re-sent. Keep a copy of your posts in the event that you need to re-send them. TOPICS: Changing Headers When Necessary If it is necessary to change the content of a thread, then it should be appropriately renamed with a new subject header. We ask that the poster who chooses to change the content of the original post will rename a new thread thereby avoiding any confusion that may ensue. The moderators reserve the right to change subject headers when appropriate. QUOTING Original written material is generally copy-written. Before you quote someone's words, either from a web site (or a private e-mail), please get their permission, or as an alternative to quoting, cite a link to their site. Original composition or paraphrase submitted to our newsgroup is public domain and may be quoted freely, although it is considered courteous to accurately acknowledge the author for the sake of clarity. Please quote appropriately when responding to messages. Snip material that is not relevant to your response and quote enough of the message you are responding to that others can understand the discussion. MESSAGE CANCELING It is the responsibility of each poster to ensure that they want to post a message. All effort should be made to avoid posting personal information. However, mistakes are made. Thus, it is up to each poster to cancel their own messages, as the moderation system for this news group is not set up to cancel messages, except in extreme cases. Keep in mind that once a message is posted, it is out in the world and canceling messages is like closing the barn door after the cows have left--in other words (IOW), Cancel messages are not honored by all news servers, so your message could still be on some server in the world. We recommend canceling at http://groups.google.com/ (see the help screen there), to avoid your message being archived.
