T2DM is a "risk equivalent" for CVD because the risk of either heart attack or stroke is the same as for someone who has already had either a heart attack or stroke thereby establishing the diagnosis of CVD. IOW, diagnosing someone with T2DM is essentially diagnosing them with CVD. Truth is simple.
