Hi everyone, I am a 37yo man, I've never being on any drugs before
"except from some occasional joint" and I have never found my self
depressed for more than one day.
My story is simple: It has been a tough year for me being out of work
made me gradually loose confidence, feeling uninspired, unmotivated,
gaining wait, feeling unactractive and the biggest trigger of my
depression was two month ago when my girlfriend left me and start
seeing another man just one week after. I have been depressed since to
a point where it became hopeless and decided to talk to my GP. He
promptly prescribed me prozac(fluoxetine) 20mg per day wich I was quite
surprised and confused at first but decided to start taking them
practically the same day I got them as I didn't see any other
alternative for me and also because I trust my doctor.
I have been on them for the last 4 days and for the last 2 days I have
been even lower than I ever remember, I feel more desperate and very
emotional and I cry for long hours.
Is this effect normal? I have been reading some forums but most of the
people just talk about feeling stomac cramps and headakes at first.. Is
there anyone out there that felt the same and did Fluoxetine really
helped at all?
Thank you all
Dino

hey, you get the "side effects" straight away, but you have to wait a couple
of weeks for the antidepressant effect to start to work

good luck mate and keep it going

Hi Dino and welcome
Your GP should have told you that fluoxitene takes at least a couple of
weeks to do anything. In my case, it never did do anything, even with
an increased dose, but I know of other people who found it to be very
effective. I got lower and lower, and continued to do so when I was
changed to venlafaxine after a couple of months. Give it a bit longer,
no more than a month, and if there's no improvement, insist on a change.
Keep posting, as that can help a lot.

Dino your doc has gone the easy route, handed out meds like smarties.
Anti depressants are a physcotropic drug (Changes the way the brain
works) in the same class as LSD,i would go back to your doctor and try
to find a drug free route first, talking therapy or similar....
ADs should be a last resort for anyone.
