At the gym I observe people lifting in different ways. They will use a
small amount of weight lifting many times, or a large amount of weight
a few time. Which is best for building muscles?

The latter. The former improves muscle endurance.

But 50 times at 80 pounds is still pretty much an endurance routine,
and it's definitely so if you're talking about a single set. Use more
weight, less reps.

And no, high reps at low weight do *not* give you muscular definition.
Just thought I should mention that before some newbie asks.

Please define "building muscles."

I think 10,000 reps with 5 lb dumbbells would be best for building mussels.
You might want to warm up with 16oz cans first. If that's too much, try
using empty cans.
