From: badabing on 13 Apr 2006 18:25 i was diagnosed w/ osteoporosis in 1996 at the age of 38...i am 48 now and have been taking fosomax for 10 years...i am in panic mode because fosomax is being blamed for osteocronosis ( dead jaw bone ) in some patients.. i have shown improvement in 10 years...i would like to think it was from the fosomax...i am also on testosterone replacement for 10 years if i stopped taking fosomax, will it cause me more harm then good...has anyone stopped taking fosomax and not gotten worse after 5 to 10 years on the medication can anyone suggest an alternative to fosomax...if it is true that fosomax is causing dead jaw this could be the osteoporosis showing its ugly head again my spinal BMD is -3.5 an improvememnt from BMD of -4.5..it doesnt seem like much, but i am better...i would appreciate any advise from other people on the newsgroup thank you in advance...frank

No need to panic, read on > i have shown improvement in 10 years...i would like to think it was > from the fosomax...i am also on testosterone replacement for 10 years Different subject, but hopefully you've been watching your PSA > if i stopped taking fosomax, will it cause me more harm then good...has > anyone stopped taking fosomax and not gotten worse after 5 to 10 years > on the medication The odds of getting ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw) appear pretty slim with Fosamax. While still not common, it occurs more frequently with the intravenous bisphosphonates often used in cancer treatment. When ONJ does occur, it seems to happen after things like invasive dental surgery. If you've been on Fosamax for 10 years, then the (small) risk of ONJ will persist for a long time, as bisphosphonates remain in the bone for 5-10 years or more. > can anyone suggest an alternative to fosomax...if it is true that > fosomax is causing dead jaw this could be the osteoporosis showing its > ugly head again Osteoporosis and ONJ are unrelated conditions. > my spinal BMD is -3.5 an improvememnt from BMD of -4.5..it doesnt > seem like much, but i am better...i would appreciate any advise from > other people on the newsgroup > > thank you in advance...frank
